FIELD TRIP: Wakodahatchee Wetlands and Green Cay Wetlands

Date: Tuesday, April 7, 2026 Location: Wakodahatchee Wetlands, Delray Beach and Green Cay Wetlands, Boynton Beach Leader Names: Susan Drew (susandrew@peoplepc.com) and Lani York Trip/area Description: Susan and Lani will lead a day-long nature walk to two neighboring man-made wetlands, both created for water treatment plant filtration. The sites feature boardwalks for crossing ponds and islands to provide close-up viewing opportunities to see wildlife and nesting birds within their natural habitat. Wakodahatchee is part of the Great Florida Birding Trail and both wetlands are popular for nature photography, with amenities like gazebos and benches, along with restrooms at the parking lot. Leave your furry friends at home because pets are prohibited. Duration of trip in hours: 7 - 8 hours Walking distance: approx. 1 mile at Wakodahatchee and 2 miles at Green Cay, all on elevated boardwalks that wind through various habitats, including cypress swamps and palm hammocks. Degree of difficulty and any special instructions: The boardwalks at both wetlands provide an easy walking experience. The group will meet at a local deli for lunch. Please bring drinking water, snacks, hat, suncreen, lunch money, and binauculars/camera. Where you’d like to meet: Carpool from IHOP at 8800 20th St. (SR 60) in Vero Beach.
