Quarterly Meeting and Education Program: The Evolution of Shame

Please join us after for a lunch hosted by Galen Hope at 12:30PM at Armando's College Park. You can RSVP to NPaolucci@galenhope.com The Evolution of Shame: Origin, Understanding, and Healing Presentation Description: Shame is a core emotion that drives pathological behavior and defense mechanisms, and is a vital aspect to address in treatment. It is a deep and painful emotional experience about oneself, not about one's behavior. When we address shame in treatment, we break it down, step outside of it, we peek at it, explore it, and begin to redefine our values. In this presentation, learners will embark on a journey through understanding shame, its origins and how it develops, how it is understood and expressed, and how it can be addressed in treatment to promote healing. We will define shame and it's various types and presentations, and discuss how it is differentiated from other emotions. We will explore how shame and other emotions evolved, as well as various theories related to shame, and the connection between shame and morality. We will delve into how shame uniquely impacts and presents with those with eating disorders and body image and trauma. We will further explore the connection between altruism and shame and how people with an altruistic temperament are more prone to shame. Presentation Learning Objectives: 1. Define “agent centered shame”, “group centered shame” and “recalcitrant shame”. 2. Identify six interpersonal needs and the foundation of shame based on what Kaufman describes as a “shame bind”. 3. Utilize 3 practical interventions to explore patients experience of shame and how it is connected to their relationship with food, body and self.
